Welcome to Peace Love Kale, a site dedicated to raw vegan food, fitness, and happiness!
Living a raw food life means you are living a life that is vibrant, nourishing, and beautiful. Absolutely everyone can benefit from adding more raw food into their diets. It's never too late, and no step in the right direction is ever too small.
Do you remember the days when dessert had to wait until after you'd eaten your vegetables? The lure of a big scoop of chocolate ice cream was what motivated you to finish your broccoli or gulp down the last bit of spinach? Or perhaps someone would offer you a delicious treat and a well-intentioned parent would shake their head crossly saying it would do nothing but ruin your appetite?
Well my darlings, imagine my delight when I discovered that those days are over. Dessert for breakfast? Check. Guilt-free ice cream? Absolutely. Treats that pack a nutritional punch? But, of course!
One of the reasons why I am so passionate about raw vegan living, is because of the tremendously inspiring community that comes with it. This lifestyle seems to attract the most vibrant and beautiful individuals, and I strongly believe that without these individuals, and without this community, I wouldn't be where I am today.
So I want to send out a huge thank you to each and every one of you. Thank you for being so passionate, thank you for loving food so much(!), thank you for being curious, and courageous, and truly inspirational.
Oh, and...It's Day 14! We have made it to the end of the 14-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge!
This morning I awoke to grey clouds and overcast skies—a far cry from the typical SoCal sunshine. While most people find this type of weather dreary and depressing, I happen to love it. Large dark clouds and warm summer rains are like a comforting hug. A reminder to slow down. an invitation to curl up with a cup of tea and a good book.
The sun may have been hiding behind a blanket of clouds today, but making this juice felt like pouring rays of liquid sunshine into a glass. My kitchen felt bright and cozy, as the fragrance of fresh golden beets and ginger filled the air. An oasis in a busy world.
In honour of Day 12 of the 14-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge, I decided to amp things up a bit by experimenting with new fruit and veggie combinations. I embraced the experience by introducing a much loved vegetable into my juicing vocabulary for the first time: sweet red pepper.
Hi everyone! Welcome to Day 11 of the 14-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge. I am happy to say that I have finally hit my stride with this cleanse!
The beginning of the second week was particularly difficult for me to stay motivated. I found that my energy was lower than normal and my general attitude toward cleansing had taken a downward turn. The smell of food at every corner was tempting and there were numerous moments when I found myself silently debating "to stray, or not to stray?"
Hi Everyone, welcome to Day 10 of the 14-Day super scrumptious, totally tasty, Juice Cleanse Challenge! Can you believe it? Only four more days left!
Drumroll please! The juice of the day is Strawberry-Basil Refresher. Lately I've been on a bit of a strawberry kick, but can you blame me? There are gorgeous, beautifully ripe strawberries at every turn! I feel so fortunate to be living in a climate where I can enjoy the undeniable deliciousness of fresh, local fruit.
Ladies and gentlemen, it is Day 9 of the 14-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge! Hooray!
By now, you are probably familiar with my philosophy on simple juice recipes (love em'). So when my friend Morgan told me how much she adores grapefruits, and when, on that very same day, the grapefruits went on sale at my local produce market, I thought to myself: It's time for a classic.
Lately I've been getting quite a few questions about nutritional intake while on a juice cleanse. Something a lot of people seem to be concerned about (—and understandably so) is getting enough iron, protein, and calcium. I'm with you guys 100%.
Is it possible to get enough vital nutrients such as calcium, iron, and protein on a raw vegan diet? What about on a juice cleanse?
Ah, the joys of summer. Beach babes, tan lines, long days and...watermelon. I love watermelon. For the health and budget conscious juicers out there, watermelon is an excellent base for juices because you get a tremendous bang for your buck, not to mention it is nutrient-dense and super hydrating. We started this two-week challenge off with 100% watermelon juice infused with fresh mint. Delicious.
Today, I got a little bit creative in the kitchen and concocted this mouth watering recipe for you to enjoy. This is truly the perfect lounge-by-the-poolside juice. All I need now is a mini umbrella and some polka dot sunnies.
This morning I woke up with an unsettled feeling in my chest. I felt needy and impatient, but for what? I had no clue. I lay in bed for a while and thought about the past week. Today is Day 7 of the Juice Cleanse Challenge—the halfway point. Physically, everything was going wonderfully. I was having a great time juicing and coming up with new recipes to share with you, I was feeling less bloated and much more energized, but my oh my, today I was just downright grumpy.
I know the title of this post isn't exactly modest, but when I first tasted this juice my tastebuds jumped for joy. It is SO unbelievably delicious, it must be magic. Or maybe I'm just a genius. Perhaps both. (Joking! But not about the deliciousness—that's 100% true).
Welcome to Day 6 of the Juice Cleanse Challenge! Week one is almost over and I am feeling energized, sassy (can't you tell?) and pumped for week two!
Today was a fantastic day. Detox symptoms subsiding, energy beginning to grow, and an extra special, super snappy green 'n apple-y juice recipe! If you're interested in reading more about common detox symptoms to expect while cleansing, or how to deal with the ones you are currently experiencing, check out this post here.
Welcome to Day 5 of the Juice Cleanse Challenge! (thunderous applause...)
Whether you're on a juice cleanse, or starting out on a raw vegan diet, it's common to experience symptoms of detoxification. These symptoms, as well as the degree to which they manifest, vary from person to person. It is important to understand how to identify different detox symptoms and to be able to recognize which symptoms are a sign that the cleanse is working it's magic, and which are an indication that perhaps something isn't quite right.
Here are 5 common detox symptoms and tips for handling them naturally and safely.
It's Day 4 of the super-duper extra juicy Juice Cleanse Challenge! Welcome everyone!
Lately the weather in Los Angeles has been extremely HOT, with daily temperatures reaching as high as 107 F. That's cook an egg on the pavement hot. But since I don't cook my food, or eat eggs, it has been more like bring your juice to the beach and lie in the ocean all day hot. So that's what I did.
Welcome to Day 3 of the Juice Cleanse Challenge! Today's goal was to up our vegetable intake while sticking to our juice cleanse. Kadi, one of my cleansing gal pals, absolutely adores tomatoes (as do I!) so we used tomatoes as our juice foundation and created this V8-inspired, vegetable-heavy, super nutritious drink. Kazam!
Guys, I did it. After many months of research and careful consideration, today I upgraded my juicer! My new baby is the Omega VRT350HD, a slow masticating juicer that handles anything and everything from hard veggies to leafy greens like a total pro. It even makes almond milk! Stay tuned for almond-y adventures in the near future.
But before I get too ahead of myself here, welcome to Day 2 of the Juice Cleanse Challenge!
Hi everybody, welcome to Day 1 of the extra-fabulous, super-yummy, totally-tantalizing 14-day Juice Cleanse Challenge!
To get us off to a great start on our very first day, I prepared three different types of juice. It's always a good idea to have a few options on hand so you are sure to get a full range of fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
Alright guys, buckle up, because it's time for a 14-Day Juice Cleanse Challenge! Since becoming a raw vegan I have done numerous juice cleanses on my own, but I have yet to write about one in detail. This time around I am delighted and honoured to have two of my great friends Kadi and Morgan joining me for the adventure! Everything is better with friends and I'm super excited to share this experience with these lovely gals! So, what exactly is this 14-day Juice Cleanse Challenge?
14 days of fresh, vibrant, fully raw juice (& nothing else) to help us reset and rejuvenate our bodies and minds.
Today was a day of experimenting in the kitchen—my favourite kind of day. My dear friend (and trusted taste-tester) Tony came over, we made a huge batch of watermelon juice, and then it was time to get down to business. I opened up all of the cupboards, lined up my mixing bowls and measuring spoons, and waited for inspiration to strike. And strike it did, my lovelies, in the form of chocolate.
This chocolate is raw, vegan, super simple to make, and yet mischievously indulgent.
I have been travelling a lot lately, to the east coast for music festivals and concerts, up to Canada to visit my dear family, and back to California for work. As much as I love travelling, I sometimes feel as though I am permanently living out of a suitcase. It's easy to get lost in the blur of airports and layovers and never-ending jetlag, and lately I've been feeling very far away from home. By taking a moment to be still and cherish the world around me, I'm able to remind myself that everywhere I go I'm surrounded by beauty and inspiration. The world is precious, and I am deeply grateful to be able to explore it.
One of my favourite things about writing Peace Love Kale is getting to connect with others who are equally as passionate about eating and living well as I am. I absolutely love swapping recipes and discovering new worlds of deliciousness! The highlight of my week was when someone friends started snapping photos of their meals and sending them my way, sending me sweet little messages to tell me what kind of juice they made, or how many bananas they ate today — I love it! I can't tell you how much these moments inspire me to keep writing and keep living a vibrant life, so thank you!
Last week one of my good friends came over for dinner. It was a Saturday evening, but instead of going out on the town we decided to keep things quiet and hang out in my favourite place: the kitchen. The kitchen is where I let myself go. I hang my worries by the door and allow myself to get lost in the moment. I spend most of my time in the kitchen alone, so it's a nice change once and a while to have some great company. Food by its very nature is such a social activity and I always feel so refreshed after an evening of getting creative in the kitchen with friends.
Southern California is famous for its sunny days, blue skies, and beach weather. But sometimes–even when it comes to sunshine–there can be too much of a good thing. This winter has been uncharacteristically dry and warm. While it may sound wonderful, the lack of rain increases the risk of fires, poor crops, and of course, results in a serious water shortage. Needless to say we were all extremely grateful when the storm clouds rolled in last week. The temperature dropped, the skies darkened, and finally...the rain fell.
Okay, so these burgers aren't exactly your traditional pub fare, but trust me, they're divine. Swap out the bun for a beautiful portobello mushroom, layer fresh veggies instead of a patty, and top it all with a raw vegan cashew nut cheese. Yes, please.
People often ask me what I'm so happy about. I have to admit, I do have a tendency to walk around with a goofy grin on my face all the time. The truth is, I am genuinely a very happy person. I realize that life is a beautiful gift and that every day is an opportunity. One of the things I do everywhere I go is document things that make me smile. Little things, simple things.
I have to be honest, when I first switched to a 100% raw food diet, I went through a period of mourning over pasta. Prior to going raw, I had been living gluten free for many years, and pasta--specifically brown rice or quinoa pasta--was a regular feature on my comfort food menu.
So, you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover that I could have the best of both worlds! Yes, you heard me, it is possible to enjoy the endless health benefits of a raw food diet while...
I have yet to make a juice that hasn't had a mindblowingly beautiful colour. Bright greens that simply scream healthy, gorgeous oranges, or this one... an unreal radiant pink. It just goes to show you how alive and stunning the food that we get straight from the earth can be. When I see things like this I wonder why we ever needed food colouring. Nature does it best, baby!
Often, the simplest things in life are the most meaningful. An evening stroll through the neighbourhood, a cozy blanket and a good book, or the smell of damp earth just after rainfall. It's easy to get caught up with gourmet recipes and complex ingredient lists, but sometimes it's important to fall back to the basics.
When I wake up in the morning one of the first things I do is make juice. There's something so satisfying about carefully washing and preparing all of the fruits and vegetables, one by one, and laying them out on the cutting board. I always take a moment to admire everything before it goes into the juicer. Gorgeous green kale, long celery stalks, juicy apples, oranges, lemons, limes, all fresh and full of life!
Before I started eating 100% raw vegan, I had some pretty serious digestion woes. I tried all sorts of things but my poor tummy would begin to bloat and ache only moments after eating. I'd wake up in the morning with a flat belly and by 10am I'd feel uncomfortable in my own clothes.
